The Importance of Sun Protection

Sun exposure is a leading cause of skin damage and can increase the risk of skin cancer, especially in older adults. Because the skin of seniors is thinner and more delicate, they are more vulnerable to the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays. Some essential tips to ensure quality sun protection include:

  1. Applying Sunscreen: Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Apply it generously to all exposed skin, and try to reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating. Don’t forget spots like your ears, neck, and the tops of your hands and feet.
  2. Wearing Protective Clothing: To shield your skin from direct sunlight, opt for lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and wide-brimmed hats. You can also wear clothing that has built-in UV protection for added safety.

Spend the hottest hours in air-conditioned spaces. If you don’t have air conditioning at home, consider visiting public places like shopping malls or libraries.
  2. Dressing Appropriately: Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing made of breathable fabrics, like cotton. Avoid dark colors because they absorb heat and can make you feel hotter.
  3. Taking Cool Showers or Baths: Taking a cool shower or bath can help lower your body temperature. Another way to stay cool is by applying wet washcloths on your wrists, neck, and forehead.
  4. Using Fans and Ventilation: Use fans to improve air circulation in your living space. Ensure that your home is well-ventilated by keeping windows open at night and closing blinds or curtains during the day to block out the sun.

Staying Hydrated

Dehydration is a serious risk for seniors during hot weather, as the body’s ability to hold onto water lessens as we get older. Because of this, aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. When you go outdoors, consider carrying a reusable water bottle to ensure you’re consistently drinking water.

Another way to stay hydrated is to incorporate fruits and vegetables with high water content into your diet. Some great options include cucumbers, watermelon, strawberries, and oranges. Avoiding alcohol and caffeine can also help you stay hydrated, as both substances can dehydrate the body. If you do consume them, make sure to drink extra water.
